Enzymes: Bromelain and Papain

What is it?

Bromelain is the name given to a group of protein-digesting enzymes obtained from pineapple. It assists digestion in the stomach and small intestine; acts as an anti-inflammatory enzyme to reduce swelling and pain after injury or surgery; has antibiotic activity; and has been shown in some small studies to have anticancer activity. It may also help to reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing blood clotting and arterial plaque formation. Papain, which is extracted from papaya, also helps in protein digestion.

Therapeutic uses of supplements

Bromelain has been used to treat several conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, athletic injuries, cancer, and to improve recovery after surgery. It may also be useful in preventing E. coli related diarrhea. Bromelain is generally very safe but allergic reactions may occur in sensitive people.

Cautions

Digestive enzymes should not be used by people suffering from inflammation of the stomach lining.
