Betaine Hydrochloride

What is it?

Betaine hydrochloride is a supplemental form of stomach acid; low production of which is associated with many problems including iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, allergies, gallstones, skin problems and an increase in bacteria, yeasts, and parasites growing in the intestines.

What it does in the body

Taken before, during or after meals, hydrochloric acid supplements may improve digestion of foods which contain protein and/or fat; though not for foods which are mostly carbohydrate.

Cautions

Use of betaine hydrochloride when a person already has normal or excessive stomach acid production or gastritis may increase the risk of gastric irritation or ulcer development.
